Thank you for your interest in adopting a potbellied pig from Alaqua Animal Refuge. Please read over the enclosed application carefully. Keep in mind that there are hundreds and hundreds of potbellied pigs now residing in long-term sanctuaries and refuges because many people thought baby potbellied pigs were cute, and did not think about what it would be like to care for a very large adult pig.
So, if this is your first pig, please take the time to research very carefully what it takes to keep a potbellied pig as a pet. There are excellent resources available on the Internet and through various miniature pig associations on the care and training of potbellied pigs. Training is important because pigs are smart – they can learn to be obnoxious as well as friendly and cooperative.
You should also know that potbellied pigs will bond very solidly with a loving and kind caretaker. They will grieve if something happens and the caretaker can no longer care for the pig and has to let him or her go.
We want to do all we can to insure that our pigs go to homes where lifetime companionship and care is the desire and goal. We strongly encourage only those who own their property to apply. It may be fine to have a potbellied pig at a particular rental house, but then if a move is necessary, it may be difficult to find a new place where it is okay to have a pig. You will notice that the adoption application has many questions about the routine care of the pig. This is not meant to be a test of any sort; we simply want to encourage you to think ahead about all aspects of care. We feel that it is important for you to be an active participant in the life, training and health care of your pig.
Our goal is to find the best possible home for our animals. To help us in meeting that goal, please answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Your accurate responses will also help us to match you with an animal who meets your requirements.
When completing an adoption form, please be sure to fill in all fields and after submission, scroll down to confirm the form was submitted. You will see a confirmation message.
Potbellied pigs are considered to be livestock in most states, so please check the current laws in your area to see if you are zoned to keep a pig at your home or facility.
If you have not previously owned a pet, then you do not need to provide a veterinarian reference. However, if you have owned an animal within the last 3 years, please provide a veterinarian reference. This is mandatory for previous pet owners.
Please provide three references, people not related to you, who can testify to your ability to provide and care for a potbellied pig. (Required)
